This definition is accurate and definitely Shirley’s cup of tea!

Shirley always has at least one project on the go, keeping herself busy and achieving positive outcomes. Her mind is full of creativity and she loves problem solving. While striving to enhance her personal development skills she in turn contributes something really valuable for her community; she enjoys giving her time to supporting community events, activities and creative design projects.

LEADERSHIP

Progress status: active

Shirley’s background in leadership began with a vague concept of leadership at school; over time her natural born instincts for it grew with involvement in the Deaf community. The concept of leadership became much more; the impact was significant. It really opened Shirley up to the possibilities of and opportunities for leadership. She started getting involved in leadership work at the local, national, and international levels.

COMMUNITY ADVOCACY

Progress status: active

Shirley is passionate about community advocacy and sees it as an opportunity to break down barriers and raise awareness about issues facing the Deaf community today. 

Shirley believes that access to information is vital, and often opens up the conversation for the Deaf community to participate in. 

Some pieces of her work have wrapped up, are work in progress or are attended to from time to time.

Shirley is enjoying following politics because of her voluntary experiences with WFYDS and human rights issues. She is collaborating with community members to create resourceful information sharing in all social media.

Auslan MEDIA ACCESS (AMA)

Progress status: the project has been stopped due to incapacity to proceed.

Auslan Media Access was established in January 2020. This group aims to raise awareness about the importance of accessibility in government press conferences.

DEAF COMMUNITY AUSTRALIA FORUM (DCAF)

Progress status: the project has been stopped due to incapacity to proceed.

Deaf Community Australia Forum gives the opportunity for Deaf Australians to have a say or share opinions about a variety of topics important to the Australian Deaf Community.

25VS25

Progress status: the project has been temporarily halted due to other priorities or commitments.

Most of non-profit and/or voluntary community organisations have challenges with their funding support from the governments or stakeholders that work hard to provide support for the communities. Shirley is an active stakeholder and actively fundraises for projects close to her heart. Currently, she is collaborating with Vanessa Alford on a project named 25VS25.

Off-Hour Illustration

Shirley loves to find inspiration in everyday life and she really embraces the creative flow. She is a fan of the Procreate app, which has a range of functions that taught Shirley a lot about digital illustration and is flexible enough to go off on many exploratory journeys!
