Today’s theme is Human Rights in times of Crisis. Over the past few years, we have faced natural disasters, the covid pandemic, country, civil and political wars, for example, the recent crisis in Afghanistan, disadvantages in people's lives such as language deprivation, poor economic, poverty, low food supply and climate change which have impacted Deaf people's lives especially when faced with accessibility barriers. Essentially, the aim is to make sure our basic human rights are protected. We also need to consider our current privileges, empathise with others and consider ways to support them. We need to ensure awareness is raised over these issues.
Slide 1: Text on top says Today’s Theme. Top left corner has a black dot. Top right corner has 15 small blue dots arranged in an array. There is an orange box with text saying Human Rights in time of Crisis - 26 September 2021. On the right side of the orange box, there is a small dark green rectangle leaning on it. On the bottom of the orange box, there is a blue rectangle leaning on it.
Slide 2: Blue bubble at top with text saying The importance of responding to a human rights crisis. There is an illustration of firefighters with red fire truck, responding an apartment building fire. Text underneath says:
Think (bolded) about how you respond to a fire? You need to call firefighters, find fire hoses and make sure everyone gets away safely.
The same concept applies to a human rights crisis (bolded), it is like a large fire – you can’t extinguish it unless you have a strong team; many members in the community to support each other. Otherwise it will get out of control.
We are all human, we have the right to live freely in a safe environment.
Slide 3: Text at top says “Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) Article 9: Accessibility. Purple box with text saying “2. State Parties shall also make appropriate measures: e) To provide forms of live assistance and intermediaries, including guides, readers and professional sign language interpreters, to facilitate accessibility to buildings and other facilities open to the public;” with an asterisk next to it.
Text underneath in orange says “This means your local, state and federal governments have a responsibility to provide qualified Auslan interpreters for all public areas and services such as press conferences, health, transportation, tourism, media, education, etc.”
Asterisk indicates supplementary text which says “Extracted from the whole Article 9 section”
Slide 4: Dark green background with a circle showing outlined hand signing SUPPORT. Top text says “4 tips (orange bolded) for communicating with Deaf people during a crisis”.
