Inter/National Week of Deaf People Day 6: Deaf Culture and Arts (25 September 2021)

(Visual Description: Video of Shirley signing in Auslan. Shirley is an Asian woman wearing a black t-shirt with a silver necklace. She is also wearing a ring on her right hand. She has her hair up in a ponytail.)

Today’s theme is Deaf Culture and Arts. In the Deaf community, we are truly privileged to experience such a unique culture, our Deaf culture. Deaf culture goes back years and is part of our history and identity. Sharing this culture with others that have had similar experiences to me - it feels like home to me.

Being a keen creative designer myself, I really enjoy having such a strong community with many creative ideas to be shared. We need to recognise the incredible amount of skill we have in the Deaf community and support and celebrate deaf businesses.

Slide 1: Text on top says Today’s Theme. Top left corner has a blue dot. Top right corner has 15 small blue dots arranged in an array. There is a purple box with text saying Deaf Culture and Arts then 25 September 2021. On the right side of the purple box, there is a small orange rectangle leaning on it. On the bottom of the purple box, there is a dark green rectangle leaning on it.

Slide 2: Left side, with text at top saying Quick Fact: What is Deaf Culture? Text in dark green box says “Do you love pancakes? Pancakes have four basic ingredients, and this is the same as for Deaf culture which also has four components: language, history, behavioural norms, values (bolded in orange). If you wish to be part of the Deaf Community, you must first understand Deaf culture. The same idea applies to Deaf Community as pancakes, if you miss one or more (bolded in orange) ingredients, it will not set completely. Right side with blue background has illustrations of self-raising flour in orange, milk carton in teal, cinnamon sugar in yellow, and eggs with a stack of pancakes with strawberry, blueberries and maple syrup in the middle. Each ingredient is connected to the stack of pancakes through arrows.

Slide 3: Dark green background with giant letters Q and A. Q in orange implies a question: How can I be a better ally? A in blue implies an answer: Make sure you under Deaf Culture first before getting involved in any project/s related to the Deaf Community and/or Auslan. You should have a Deaf Consultant and/or a Deaf representative as part of the project.

Slide 4: Purple background with an illustration of an iPhone with text saying Want to follow Deaf Creators/Artists? On right side, there is a list of Deaf Creators/Artists to follow. Supplementary text says Yet, there have more deaf creators/artists, you will need to research more.
