Today’s theme is Intersectional Deaf Communities. Australia is a multicultural country with many different cultures that make up our nation.
I personally have three different cultures ingrained in me. I am Australian. I am Deaf. I am Chinese. I hold the values from these three cultures very close to my heart.
I encourage you all, in the Deaf community to recognise your own cultural backgrounds and be proud of them. It is important to show each other respect and learn from each other with the ultimate goal of eliminating oppression and discrimination.
We, as humans are all equal to each other and we must stay united because we are one world.
Slide 1: Text on top says Today’s Theme. Top left corner has an orange dot. Top right corner has 15 small black dots arranged in an array. There is a grey box with text saying Intersectional Deaf Communities then 24 September 2021. On the right side of the grey box, there is a small blue rectangle leaning on it. On the bottom of the grey box, there is an black rectangle leaning on it.
Slide 2: Background is blue with a white line bordering it. There is an outline of hands signing INTERSECTIONALITY. Next to it on left side, there is an orange dot and then an array of black dots. In a dark green bubble on the bottom left corner, text says What is intersectionality? in orange. Underneath it, text in white says Intersectionality is the interconnectedness of a person’s identity/status. Understanding this concept means we can recognise that each person has their own experiences of discrimination and oppression due to their status ie gender, race, class, culture, sexuality, religion, language, ability, disability, etc.
Slide 3: Dark green bubble on top has text saying The Deaf Community is like the colour orange. Without both red and yellow, it isn’t whole.
There are two blobs overlapping. Left blob is red; right blob is yellow. When they interact, they become yellow. Red blob respresents cultural-linguistic group. Yellow blob represents disability group. Orange interact represents deaf community.
Text at bottom says The Deaf community has an unique intersectionality being part of both a cultural-linguistic group (bolded) and a disability group (bolded). And by default need to be given the same rights (bolded) as both groups. Society frequently views the Deaf community as part of the disability group and are unaware of their cultural-linguistic background.
Slide 4: Dark green background with two orange lines on each side. White text box with text: I am Deaf. I am a woman. I am an Auslan user. I am Australian. I am Chinese. I am a youth. I am middle-class. This is quoted by Shirley Liu.
Slide 5: Purple background with text in white saying “If we aren’t intersectional, some of us, the most vulnerable are going to fall through the cracks.” This is quoted by Kimberle Williams Crenshaw, a lawyer and a civil rights advocate and a leading scholar of critical race theory.
