Who Am I?

(This is my sign name)

– Illustrated by Livi Creations Co

Born and raised in Sydney, Shirley’s heritage is Chinese and her family now call Australia home. Shirley’s view of the world is shaped by three cultures – Australian, Deaf and Chinese. Incorporating three cultures in her daily life has enriched her life and provided her with unique insight.

Shirley’s talents and interests are diverse and at her core is the belief of fostering a Deaf community to feel comfortable in its own skin. Cohesiveness and collectivism are the keystones to building the right support network for young people so they can contribute to the rich and colourful fabric of the Deaf community. Shirley believes that giving a bit of her own skin will help to improve the lives of others.

On the side, Shirley puts her creativity skills to good use in the area of graphic design, taking inspiration from a range of design and illustration types and trends. Shirley sets herself the challenge of constantly working on improving her design skills.

Shirley believes that professional work is necessary, but volunteer work is her very core. She is perpetually inspired by her own rich experiences of participating in the World Federation of the Deaf Youth Section and passionately supports their endeavours in improving the lives of young Deaf people all around the world.

Shirley’s vision for the Deaf Community is to access full information on any platform without any barriers and for all media outlets and government parties to be aware of minority group needs and revise the legal framework including the improving of the recognition of Auslan.

When Shirley is not working or volunteering, you will find her catching up on precious sleep, socialising with friends and making new ones, watching Netflix, playing sports, relaxing, and travelling to amazing new locations.
