Inter/National Week of Deaf People Day 1: Cherishing Deaf History (20 September 2021)

(Visual Description: Video of Shirley signing in Auslan. Shirley is an Asian woman wearing a blue t-shirt with a silver necklace. She is also wearing a ring on her right hand. She has her hair up in a ponytail.)

Today’s theme is Cherishing Deaf History. This theme is so important to me because I really enjoy learning about Deaf history, looking at how language has evolved over the years, culture and our community.

I consider myself truly fortunate to have met several deaf role models growing up, who would share their stories.

Today I would like to recognise three different people, Betty Bonser, Alan Fairweather and Nola Colefax.

Those three people enriched my life so much with their skills, experience and knowledge on a range of topics including Deaf Theatre, advocacy, the history of Deaf schools like North Rocks, Deaf sports.

I encourage all of you to look into your own Deaf history, acknowledge what has happened over the years and celebrate it.

Slide 1: Text on top says Today’s Theme. Top left corner has a dark green dot. Top right corner has 15 small grey dots arranged in an array. There is a purple box with text saying Cherishing Deaf History then 20 September 2021. On the right side of the purple box, there is a small blue rectangle leaning on it. On the bottom of the purple box, there is an orange rectangle leaning on it.

Slide 2: A photo shows Shirley as a little girl shaking hands with an older woman, Betty Bonser. An older man stands next to Betty holding a piece of paper – his name is Alan Fairweather. This is a screenshot from a video filmed in 1999.

Slide 3: There are two photos. Top photo is of Shirley with an older lady, Nola Colefax OAM. Bottom photo is of Nola Colefax OAM pointing to a photo she is in as a young girl. Both photos were taken on 15 April 2016.
