Deaf Community Australia Forum is a space to discuss different issues concerning the Australian Deaf Community. It is primarily run from a Facebook page by a group of volunteers.
The purpose of this Facebook page is for the community to come together, discuss those issues and work out how we can work together to present a united front. It also encourages others in the community to learn further about the issues concerning them and feel empowered through the process.Â
Deaf Community Australia Forum can be described as a virtual deaf club. It brings the community members together and encourages them to have many healthy discussions! The outcomes from those discussions also benefit our national peak advocacy organisation, Deaf Australia because they are able to gather information and be better informed as to what the community members think and feel on vital issues.
There have been five live sessions so far, you are able to view them here:
Recently Shirley have decided to conclude this project due to her high volume of work and commitments. Watch her recent announcement video on the Facebook here.
Hello to you all, the Deaf Australian community. It has been some time since I posted on this DCAF (Deaf Community Australia Forum) platform. I’ve been thinking for quite some time and I think it’s time to share some news - an update and I hope that this provides some understanding on what’s happening. For quite some time there has been a lot happening with work, projects, different commitments - I’ve been doing a lot. My time is becoming more and more restricted which leaves me very little time to devote to DCAF. I’m finding it’s impossible to keep participating sustainably with this. I know for me it’s been really hard for me to consider whether to continue or if there were other options. I realise now that I have to let go of this and DCAF will close for now. I know there are other people who are keen to continue to keep on with this initiative. The name and the concepts may stay the same or it might adapt a bit. We will post as we go and let you know when information is ready to be released. I want to say a big thank you to all of you, the community that has supported me in this initiative, the discussions, focusing on the developing and maintaining of strong bonds within the community, solving issues, coming up with creative ways to solve problems. So thank you. I would also like to thank the group of volunteers behind the scene, supporting this, posting on social media, translating from Auslan to English, involved in tech stuff like webinars and all these other different things. It has been amazing. I won’t forget the volunteers; the time and input has been so valuable. So thank you. The last thing I want to say is thank you to all of you who have supported me over the years. I know the last two years under Covid has been hard. A challenge. But we’ve still manage to persist and navigate our way through these challenges. I want to reaffirm that I have a lot of passion for the deaf community. I have such strong connections to the community and this will continue. There will be some volunteering, some advocacy that I will continue to get involved in on the local, national and international level. I will post updates as time goes on and I’ll do it as a side activity. If you have any thoughts, questions or you just want to get in touch I’m open to you contacting me any time. I’ll see you around. Bye-bye.
